Cigarette Smoking is an addiction and in most cases, addiction to the nicotine in the cigarettes is the main concern although there are 1000's other chemicals in the cigarettes which are equally
addictive.
Now as you are probably aware, addiction to any substance is always difficult to overcome because of the nasty withdrawal symptoms and the psychology of dependence.
A lot of stop smoking programs fail the individuals amongst other reasons due to their inability to deal with the nicotine withdrawal symptoms and the psychology of dependence on the nicotine which inevitably lead to relapse.
The most common nicotine withdrawal symptoms are mood changes, insomnia, anxiety, depression, headaches and frustration.
You may also experience being quite irritable and restless in the first couple of days after stopping.
In my opinion although some may disagree with me, a good starting point to discover how to quit smoking is to first ask yourself why you want to quit smoking in the first instance.
Why?… did I hear you ask. Well, to most people the smoking cessation journey will not be easy or smooth while the minority will find it relatively easy.
This minority and also non-smokers usually find it difficult to understand why others can’t just quit
when they want to.
This why having a motivational factor which you hold on to very strongly does help in the process of smoking cessation.
That motivational factor becomes your focal point in whatever method you adopt to stop the smoking habit.
The motivational factor alone is not enough though.
You have to be mentally prepared to quit smoking as well.
There is a serious mind issue here that is very, very important and it is an inter-play between mind and body as far as smoking cessation is concerned.
Your mind, it was, that convinced you to initiate the smoking habit for whatever reason in the beginning. If you cast your mind back to when you lit your first cigarette, you will remember that you had to engage your mind to convince it that you are doing the right thing.
For instance, you probably wanted to look cool amongst your friends when you were a teenager and this won you acceptance with them. Fair enough.
Usually this mind-event happens without any serious effort on your part but it is crucial in the quitting process if you want to be successful at it.
Now, I want you to try and remember that very reason you started smoking.
That's right, let's go back to the beginning.
Ahaa, now we are getting somewhere.
That same mind that convinced your body to start the smoking habit will also need to convince your body to stop the habit.
A good stop smoking program should address this core issue if it is designed to have an attractive success rate.
This is a good starting point in your quest to quit smoking.
My free ebook that I will give to you at the end of this piece on the next web page will give you some stop smoking tips that will enhance your chances of quitting for good.
There are various ways to quit smoking.
I suppose the most popular method is to quit smoking cold turkey.
Don’t ask me how the term ‘cold turkey’ was coined but it simply means the smoker stops smoking abruptly on a chosen date.
The smoker never smokes a cigarette again, hopefully for the rest of his life.
Now this method is free for everyone to use. The quit smoking cold turkey method does not require the subject to use any substance, drugs or medical aids to help with the process.
However, you need to be strong-willed to succeed with it, as Will Power is required but
not many of us you will agree have that determination and will power to do this.
It is easier said than done. This is the downside of this approach.
There is a right way and wrong way to go about stopping smoking using the ‘ Quit Smoking
Cold Turkey’ or ‘Will Power’ method which I will give to you for free to download at the
on the next web page.
Another popular method is the use of medical aids in the form of patches, pills, gums and inhalers or nasal sprays.
These methods are collectively called Nicotine Replacement Therapy or NRT for short.
As the name implies, these aids simply replace the nicotine the smoker normally gets from
the cigarettes but only in smaller quantities.
Over time the quantity of the nicotine is gradually tailed off i.e gradual withdrawal until weaned
off the nicotine altogether just like it’s done to babies when they are breastfed.
One advantage of the Nicotine Replacement Therapy is that they are readily available from your local pharmaceutical shop without prescription but some of them do require a doctor’s prescription.
NRT are available in the form of patches, pills, gums, inhalers or sprays.
Another advantage is that NRT are easy to use.
Zyban however works in a different way and certainly requires a doctor’s prescription.
The active ingredient i.e the chemical substance in Zyban is brupopion hydrochloride but you don’t need to remember that. Only doctors and pharmacists need to know that.
On the other hand, you may want to remember it to impress your friends and throw it in the next time you are having a conversation with them.
Zyban is not a Nicotine Replacement Therapy aid but works by altering some chemicals in
the brain called neurotransmitters.
Zyban increases the level of mood enhancing chemicals in the brain which probably act as substitute to nicotine. Over time, you will gradually stop smoking as you won’t experience nicotine withdrawal symptoms.
As with everything medical, there will be side effects with some of these Nicotine Replacement Therapy agents or with Zyban. You should consult your doctor to ascertain if any of these stop smoking aids are suitable for you.
Experts who are critical of nicotine patches or gums say these stop smoking aids merely prolong the usually painful and awful nicotine withdrawal symptoms or cravings period.
Besides, as you probably know, using nicotine patches, nicotine gums or pills including zyban to quit smoking does take a fairly long time before you will eventually stop.
What does this mean?… you ask.
Well, be prepared to spend a bit of money as the cost of purchasing quit smoking aids can mount up quickly before you know it and in my experience, the relapse rate is fairly high.
By relapse, I mean quitters resuming the smoking habit again after they’ve stopped which translates to a low success rate.
Relapses are usually triggered by intense stress and I think the true test of the effectiveness
of a quit smoking program is how a smoking quitter responds to a stressful situation in one’s life.
A lot of smoking cessation programs do fail on this score.
A lot of people have also kicked their nicotine addiction by using hypnosis or hypnotherapy.
All I will say here is quit smoking hypnotherapists vary in their approach and consequently success
results vary.
If you don’t choose wisely and preferably by recommendation by someone who has used the program or knows someone personally who has, then it could become a hit or miss.
Quit smoking hypnosis does work and can be very effective too, if the hynotherapist is well trained, knows what he is doing and has treasured experience in his technique.
How about acupuncture as a quit smoking aid?
Basically, the principle of acupuncture revolves around energy flow in the body.
Needles or small seeds are placed at certain body points to enhance free flow of this energy.
The free flow of energy therefore blunts the usual nicotine withdrawal symptoms.
Where seeds are used instead of needles by the acupuncturist, the tiny seeds are placed on the preferred body site usually around the back of the ears, held in place with a sticky tape and the subject will press on the seeds anytime he/she has a craving symptom to blunt it.
The technique is called acupressure as opposed to acupuncture.
A few people have succeeded in quitting smoking by way of acupuncture or acupressure.
A lot of the success stories come from the far east especially Hong Kong where it has been successfully used to help people to quit smoking opium.
Although acupuncture has been used in the West for at least 3 decades, quit smoking success stories are fewer than the far east.
Closely related to this method is the quit smoking using laser technology.
Essentially this method involves the use of a cold laser to apply pressure on certain energy points to release chemicals called endorphins.
Endorphins act as natural pain killers and they also blunt the nicotine withdrawal symptoms with time until the symptoms stop altogether.
I don’t wish to list the hazards of cigarette smoking or nicotine addiction here but suffice it to say that, it is an unhealthy habit by and large, and the tobacco industry has a conspiracy to keep you smoking forever if they have their way and they are good at it.
They spend billions of dollars to keep you addicted.
Billions of dollars are at stake. Millions of deaths result all over the world.
The main pre-occupation of top corporate executives sitting around boardrooms is to discuss ways to improve their share of tobacco market.
Their success depends on keeping you smoking and getting people that don’t smoke to start.
It’s all about the billions.
The tobacco companies have huge budgets.
For a good number of years, they have spent huge advertising budgets running into billions of dollars and they know how to keep their customers. They want you to die a smoker.
Their bottom line depends on it. And you will if you do not quit and this is the absolute truth.
Can we just mention the benefits to you if you are still wondering whether to stop.
If you quit smoking today here are some of the benefits to you.
This list is by no means exhaustive.
Live longer and live better.
Become a high-energy person. No more lethargy.
Reduce your chance of getting cancers of the lung, mouth and throat.
Have cleaner lungs.
Rid yourself of shortness of breath, (I should know).
Re-discover fantastic mental clarity.
Your skin colour will improve.
Your taste buds will come alive again.
Acquire white teeth everyone will adore.
Re-Discover your self-esteem.
Significantly reduce your risk of a heart attack and stroke.
Sort out your impotence problem without the need for any medications if you are a man. Don’t you want your love life to bounce back like the good old days?
Also save money you spend daily on cigarettes.
Now, one problem of searching for solutions to our problems in modern life both online and offline is that we are faced with so many choices.
The net effect is we get confused about the best way forward.
You try this and you try that, spend a lot money, waste a lot of valuable time and effort and you end up exactly where you started.
End Result…. Frustration and Anger.
The same applies to smoking cessation programs both online and offline.
My solution to that is to go by recommendation only and preferably unbiased.
You or someone you know has tried a particular product, it works smoothly and effectively. He recommends it because he has confidence in it. Period.
More importantly, he gets the desired result and in our case he stops and quits smoking for good including periods of extreme stress and still counting.
You ask him, if he has any desire to resume smoking again, and he says “NEVER, that thought never crosses my mind and never will”.
That’s the kind of program that is worth your time, effort and money.
Now, please answer the following question as honestly as you can.
Are you fed up of continuing this smoking habit and have a genuine desire to quit?
